I asked Bob to say a little bit about the use of a Coil over Spark Plug rather than the ignition distributors that I was oddly more used to because of being raised on classic cars. That went on to many other things.
The older distributor opened up points, but those points would burn if you ran a full twelve volts through them. So a resistor was added to cut it down to 6 volts, but a high performance engine can’t refill the coil at 8,000 rpm with only 6 volts. With the distributor in the back it is run off the timing chain through the camshaft. When the timing chain gets worn out then the cam flutters, when that happens then the distributor flutters, which leads to it fire all over the place. It would hammer out rod bearings when it was so far off.
Now there is a coil for each spark plug, and they get much more than 6volts, MSD sends 400 volts into the coil, then transforms that up to 40,000 volts. With the coil directly on the valve cover, the computer reads the crank position, with a notched wheel on the crank. Every time the notch reaches the sensor on the side of the block the sensor knows which cylinder to fire, so it is related to the position of the cylinder. And they thus do not run into the under saturated point and keeps the spark hot and firing.
Next we saw the COPO version of the LS Engine – 427 Cubic inch with a Holley Tunnel Ram fuel injected manifold. Technically notable on the intake was the drive by wire, where your foot doesn’t mechanically open the throttle body, it acts like a rheostat (like on a slot car) to send a signal through the computer to tell it how much to open the throttle body with an electric motor. That removes any complicated cable that you might need to reach it, but GM in its wisdom can also use it to make you slow down if the government only thought you should be going so fast.
Next thing we noticed was the ATI Super Damper. Each firing impulse from the piston to the rod to the crank shaft, sets up a harmonic or vibration that makes the crank shaft ring back and forth. At a certain RPM it can ring itself to where it cracks, the damper absorbs those vibrations internally as on the other end of the crank shaft either through the torque convertor or the flywheel to help smooth the pulsations of each cylinder pushing on the crankshaft. It is kind of a new advancement, it has been used on diesels for years, but it is a great crankshaft saver on high horsepower engines. There is also a situation when you let the clutch out, the crankshaft tends to twist, especially on race cars. This helps take up some of that destructive twist in there.
