    Engine Fiat JTD 1.9L 110kW (Saab, Alfa, Opel 1.9 CDTi Z19DTH). This Pierburg component is pain in the ass (the second typical issue is the sticking swirl flaps at intake manifold of this engine).
    Symptoms of EGR malfunction: engine behaves like having misfire below 2500rpm, inconvenient tugs and usually lack of power at low rpm. Often also ODT failure codes show up: P1110, P0400, P0401, P0402, P0700 etc.

    Video shows decent continuous operation of the valve first. That’s how ECU wants to control the EGR. The faulty operation is shown at the end of video.
    Main issues are: 1) corrosion of the solenoid piston due to humidity and heat, 2) sticking of the poppet’s rod in the bushing due to carbon deposits. Both causes either no movement or limited ON-OFF erratic movement of the valve with huge hysteresis. ECU is unable to control the valve any longer.
    Both issues are expectable environmental difficulties, but the real root cause of the failure is LOW FORCE of the solenoid actuator. It’s been designed for an 1.5A H-bridge with a nominal spec 1.2A only. So about 17W available which is insufficient power to overcome sticking/ friction.
    You can try to can refurbish your EGR valve. From my experience this would help for less than 20.000 km.
    Official dealer would replace the EGR valve for approx. 400 Euro which will help for 50.000- 70.000 km. Permanent solution was not in place so far.

    But there is proven electrical solution of this issue now. A piggy back box to be inserted between wiring harness and EGR valve. Contact me if you are interested in getting one.
